Moxibustion: a warm, healing therapy
Moxibustion, often called “moxa,” is a gentle heat therapy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It can provide deeper warmth in your muscles, better energy, or relief from stubborn pain, especially when combined with acupuncture. For more than 2,500 years it has supported healing, eased discomfort, and strengthened the body.
What is moxibustion?
Moxibustion uses dried mugwort (a healing herb) that is shaped into a stick or cone and burned near the skin. The warm heat from the moxa reaches deep into the muscles and tissues. In TCM, this warmth helps move qi and blood, open the meridians, and support the body’s natural healing.
Many people describe moxa as a soothing, relaxing heat—like a warm sunbeam focused on the exact spot that needs help.
How moxibustion works
In TCM, pain and illness often come from cold, blockage, or low energy in the body. Moxa brings gentle heat to these areas, helping them open and flow again. The warmth can reach both the surface and deeper layers of the body.
Modern research suggests that moxibustion may work through:
Deep warming effects that relax muscles and tissues
Infrared radiation from the burning herb
Natural plant compounds released from mugwort
Together, these effects help the body feel more balanced and supported.
“Moxa” combined with acupuncture
Moxa and acupuncture work beautifully together. Acupuncture opens pathways of qi, reduces tension, and helps the body reset. Moxibustion adds warmth and strength to those same pathways.
When used together, they can:
Boost energy
Reduce pain
Improve digestion
Support the immune system
Warm areas that feel cold or weak
Many patients feel deeper relief when both therapies are used in the same session.
Moxibustion helps with many conditions
Moxibustion is used for a wide range of conditions. It may be helpful for:
Chronic pain (back, knees, shoulders)
Digestive issues
Fatigue or low energy
Menstrual discomfort
Cold hands and feet
Joint stiffness
Asthma or breathing issues
Slow healing or weakness
In TCM, moxa is also used to support overall wellness, especially during times of stress, illness, or seasonal change.
A therapy with a long history
Part of Chinese medicine for thousands of years, ancient texts from the Han dynasty describe how moxa was used to treat many kinds of illness. Over time, it became a trusted therapy for warming the body, improving circulation, and supporting long‑term health.
Today, moxibustion is still widely used because it is simple, natural, and effective for many people.
What you can expect
Your practitioner will choose the right type of moxa for your specific health issue. The moxa may be held above the skin, placed on a slice of ginger or salt, or shaped into a stick that warms an area gently. You will feel a steady, comforting heat—not burning or pain.
Expect to leave your session feeling relaxed, lighter, and more energized.
